El sistema está diseñado para respetar y cumplir con los estándares internacionales en calidad, ahorro de energía y cuidado del medio ambiente, y cuenta con la capacidad para abastecer las distintas instalaciones operativas y un campamento, para aproximadamente 500 personas.
Se distingue por la decisión de preservar el salar como un sistema ambiental complejo. Consecuentemente, las operaciones e instalaciones se planificaron desde una base ambiental robusta y estudiada, respetando la vegetación, flora, fauna, limnología, agua, suelos, aire y arqueología, de manera de proteger los sitios de mayor importancia biológica.
